The History of The Lodge of Dawn

The Lodge of Dawn Freemasons Lodge is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire and was founded on the 22nd of September 1947. Our masonic lodge is a ‘daughter lodge’ of Loyalty Lodge, which is also a Leeds Freemasons Lodge.

The history of The Lodge of Dawn can be traced back all the way to 1927.

In 1927 Loyalty Lodge 4971 was formed from its mother lodge, Excelsior Lodge. Loyalty Lodge was unique among the Leeds lodges in as much as it was the first in the city formed with the object of uniting masons of both the Jewish and Christian faiths. The success of Loyalty Lodge in providing the means whereby Jewish and Christian Freemasons could practice freemasonry together owed much to one of the founders, Worshipful Brother Leonard L. Zossenheim PAGDC, PPGW. Such was the esteem in which W Bro. Zossenheim was held that he was selected by the founder members, chiefly from Excelsior Lodge, to be the first Worshipful Master of Loyalty Lodge.

So successful was Loyalty Lodge in achieving its objectives that it gave birth to a daughter Lodge, The Lodge of Dawn 6511. The Lodge of Dawn was founded, or ‘consecrated’ on September 2nd, 1947 in the presence of the then Provincial Grand Master, Sir Anthony Gadie, 23 original founders including W Bro. Zossenheim and 129 distinguished worshipful brethren and brethren. The current officers of The Lodge of Dawn can be found here and you can also read the explanation of the symbolism of Lodge of Dawn banner.

The Lodge of Dawn marked its 75th anniversary with a ‘Ladies after Lodge’ event in March 2023 and is now a vibrant, well-established flourishing lodge, holding meetings on the 4th Tuesday of every month.
