Memories of a Freemason – 1953 Ladies Night

A wonderful peek into the history of The Lodge of Dawn via the magic of cine film, from W Bro. Stephen Brown, one of our Past Masters.

Irvin Buntman was one of the founders of The Lodge of Dawn, back in 1947. His name can be seen on The Lodge of Dawn board, at Castle Grove Masonic Hall in Headingley, Leeds where the lodge still meets. His nephew, W Bro. Stephen Brown found this cine film about 10 years ago. Fortunately for us he had it digitalised, and he then added the caption at the beginning and the music. Whilst, unfortunately it isn’t great quality, it gives us a wonderful window into the past, and allows us to see how grand Ladies Nights were back in the day. Despite the quality it is still good enough to recognise faces, sadly none of those you see in the film are still with us. Below is a list of names of those, amongst others, who appear in the film. I’m sure that some members of the Lodge of a certain age will recognise faces! There may be others that The Lodge of Dawn brethren also recognise.

Betsy Brown (W Bro. Brown’s grandmother)
