On 3 May 2025, sixteen members of the Lodge of Dawn embarked on an extraordinary visit to the majestic York Minster, an experience that will be cherished for years to come. The day was graced with glorious sunshine, its golden light pouring through the cathedral’s spectacular stained glass windows, enhancing the wonder of this historic masterpiece.
Our guide for the day was none other than W Bro Roger Potts, a dedicated official volunteer at York Minster, whose depth of knowledge and passion for its history made our tour truly unforgettable. As we meandered through the awe-inspiring halls, Roger’s expert explanations brought the intricate stained glass windows to life. He revealed fascinating details about their artistry, symbolism, and the painstaking work involved in their preservation.
One of the greatest surprises of the day was learning about the remarkable contributions made by Freemasons’ lodges throughout history in supporting the upkeep of this monumental cathedral. York Minster stands not just as a testament to centuries of faith and architectural brilliance but also as a reflection of the benevolence and dedication of those who have played a part in its maintenance.
Beyond the impressive history and craftsmanship, the visit was enriched by the camaraderie shared among Lodge members. Conversations were filled with admiration, curiosity, and a newfound appreciation for York Minster’s grandeur. The beauty of the day, combined with Roger’s engaging storytelling, created an atmosphere of reflection and awe that will remain with us all.
As the sunlight streamed through the magnificent windows, illuminating the cathedral in a celestial glow, we left York Minster with a profound sense of connection—not only to its breathtaking heritage but also to its interconnectedness with Freemasonry. It was a truly inspiring experience, reminding us of the enduring spirit of Freemasonry and the timeless beauty of history preserved.
