Tour of historic Bradford

On a sunny May 1st weekend a group of intrepid Brothers from the lodge along with their better halves, some of their children (and one dog) enjoyed a guided heritage tour around the  historic Little Germany, area of Bradford.

The tour of the area was hosted by professional historian and tour guide Nigel Grizzard.

The group learned that the area was formerly home to German merchants, many of whom had Jewish roots, who came to Bradford in the late 1850s drawn there by the prosperous textile industry in the region. As Freemasonry today records (FMT Bradford ) there is a rich and vibrant history of Freemasonry in Bradford, which continues to thrive today with a strong Masonic community, beong part of the Province of Yorkshire, West Riding.

The art around Little Germany was both fun and interesting featuring David Hockney, Mr Bean and an interesting living room sculpture complete with armchair!

Following the tour some of the group enjoyed scones and tea at the Midland Hotel, which many will remember was formerly home to Victoria Lodge No. 2669, consecrated back in 1897, but which sadly closed in October last year.

The tour was arranged by the lodge’s social secretary, W Bro. Philip Myers and is part of the vibrant social life of The Lodge of Dawn.

To quote one of the attendees, “I have to confess it was much more interesting than I thought it would be. An afternoon well spent.” Well, we’ll take that as a 5 star review !!!
